Introduction
Introduction
Welcome to Karrie Bullock’s ePortfolio. This ePortfolio fulfills the graduation requirement for a culminating experience in the School of Library and Information Science as San Jose State University. All students are required to complete the ePortfolio in order to demonstrate our understanding and application of the fifteen competencies necessary to work successfully as information professionals. This has been a three year journey to get to this point, during which time I have worked as a paraprofessional in law and volunteer positions in different libraries, all of which, combined with SJSU SLIS coursework, have provided invaluable insight into the profession through observation, exploration, internships and research. Through these experiences and through my work, I believe that I am ready to take the next step into the world of the library professional.
The overall organization of the e-portfolio include: an introduction; competencies A-N; and a professional philosophy, all of which summates my SLIS coursework and experiences. Within each competency I provide an introduction and synthesis of the components that constitute the overarching meaning or intent of the competency. Evidence included in the competencies to prove the applicability of the competency, are in either Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, JPEG, YouTube video, and Microsoft PowerPoint formats. I feel that these formats reflect the most current methods of information recordation and preservation.
I focused on emergent themes in my coursework when determining the direction and design of the ePortfolio. It reflects my deep interest in information and metadata, and the determination to build my own arsenal of reference tools, from print to electronic and beyond. I have received permission from all project team members, and have highlighted my own contributions throughout. I chose to use SJSU SLIS’s D2L matrix for the ePortfolio based upon its relative simplicity and to further an intimate knowledge of the distance learning platform.
I have discovered many truly passionate areas in my coursework through SJSU SLIS, especially regarding the self-represented litigant in the library, the Open Access publishing initiative, leadership and management structures, cataloging and MARC records, evolving learning behaviors dictated by the digital landscape, and many others. The world of librarianship is vast, but SJSU SLIS has provided the proper bibliographic record for my entry into the profession.
I believe that this ePortfolio will prove my strong foundation in Library and Information Science, and communicate my readiness to further my career in librarianship.
